Dear partners and friends,
This month I had the joy of attending, and proclaiming a blessing at, the wedding of Ryan Jakovac and Stephanie Simpson. Four years ago the Lord sent me to the city of Krabi in Thailand where I met Ryan for the first time. It was a divine encounter as Ryan prayed with me to surrender his life to the Lord Jesus Christ, and subsequently travelled with me in the ministry for six months. Ryan has now married a lovely Christian lady in Stephanie. We pray for God’s richest blessing in their new life together.
Next month I am scheduled to speak at a leadership seminar in Vanimo, West Sepik, Papua New Guinea, near the border with the Indonesian province of Papua. We are expecting 200 pastors and leaders to attend from the surrounding region.
I pray for you, that you are continuing to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). Daily, continual meditation of God’s exceeding great and precious promises is a sure way of keeping our heart in faith to ensure that God’s grace and peace is being multiplied in our lives, thereby receiving all things that pertain to life and godliness, partaking of God’s divine nature and escaping the corruption in the world caused by lust (2 Peter 1:2-4). Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand… above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:10-13, 16
In this teaching we are going to look at the shield of faith and how to operate it successfully. The first thing we need to notice in the above passage is; who is our enemy? Our enemies are the wicked spiritual powers who are in the earth. They are called devils. These devils are fallen angels who have been cast down from heaven and now have access in the realm of earth and hell (2 Peter 2:4, Luke 10:18). These devils are able to shoot at us with fiery darts.
If we do not know how to successfully operate God’s armour (in particular, in this teaching, God’s shield of faith) we will be vulnerable to the fiery darts of the wicked. If the fiery darts hit us the result may be us not being strong in the Lord or the power of His might. In other words, the fiery darts are designed to create fear and uncertainty in us which may result in God’s promises and blessings being stolen from our lives.
The enemies’ darts are designed to deceive us, thereby creating devilish strongholds in our mind, thoughts, imagination and emotions (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). If we are not spiritually discerning we may not know why we have negative thoughts about a brother or sister, an aspect of the Word of God, our health, our finances, our safety or many things concerning our future. The devil’s fiery darts are often thoughts, which are lies or distortions of the truth. If we are not discerning we can accept the lies of the devil and make decisions not based on love, all the facts, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God. These wrong decisions may cause us to walk away from God’s will, plan and blessing for our lives.
Notice that the shield of faith is God’s shield, it is God’s armour, and it is not our shield. So how do we put on God’s shield of faith? Romans 10:17 says, so then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. So we know that the source of faith is the Word of God. To have the shield of faith in a position to be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked our mind, heart and emotions must be aligned with God’s Word, and in particular God’s covenant promises. We will need to be well and truly “in faith”!
Paul the apostle wrote in Galatians 2:20 I live by the faith of the Son of God. In Revelations 19:13 and John 1:1, 14 the Son of God is called the Word of God. It is the faith that is contained in the Word of God (the Son of God) that equips us to live by faith, and therefore successfully live the Christian life. This is why meditation of God’s Word, particularly His covenant promises, is so vital to being a victorious Christian. Meditation is the process of receiving, growing and nurturing God’s Word in our heart, which results in receiving God’s faith in our heart, which enables us to put up God’s shield of faith. This process of meditation will, over time, give us victory over all the fiery darts of the wicked. We will find ourselves, like the apostle Paul, living by the faith of the Son of God, which comes from God’s promises being firmly established in our heart.
If we are not meditating God’s covenant promises on a daily basis we are neglecting the maintenance of "taking the shield of faith", and we may therefore become vulnerable to being hit by the fiery darts of the wicked. These fiery darts can steal from us God’s promises of healing, financial provision, safety, and the ability to walk in love etc. This can result in broken relationships, fear, failure, mistrust and disappointment with God, sickness, lack and all the other calamities which are present in the world.
For these reasons Lord instructed Joshua, who was to lead Israel to inherit the promises of God, to be diligent in meditation of His Word; this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night… then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:8). The psalmist also wrote, blessed is the man… his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he doeth shall prosper (Psalm 1:1-3). Jesus said a similar thing, if ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:31-32). Paul the apostle, in the New Covenant, wrote: be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:2). Freedom from the curse and devilish oppression, and the ability to walk in God's perfect will, comes as we continue in God’s Words. Fruitfulness in God’s kingdom will come as a result of abiding in God’s Word (Mark 4:20, John 15:4-5, 7).
Pray with me: “Father in heaven I thank you that you have given me access to your spiritual armour, that I may be protected from all the fiery darts of the wicked. I pray you will open my understanding to spiritual warfare. I receive your strength to be able to meditate your covenant promises day and night, that I might ensure my heart is established in your faith. Then your faith shield shall protect me from the enemies’ attacks and your faith will draw your supernatural power into my circumstances. Then I will be free to walk into your manifold covenant blessings. I pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.”
