Welcome
Dear partners and friends,
I pray the Lord continues to strengthen you to focus your mind and imagination upon His precious promises rather than the struggles of life you may be experiencing. This is our greatest area of battle: “casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Where our imagination gravitates is a telling sign as to, how well our heart is established in God’s promises and, if we have genuine faith in those precious promises. When we are truly ‘in faith’ concerning a promise of God our imagination will be fixed on that promise (Isaiah 26:3). God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6); daily meditation of God’s precious promises is really worth the effort! With love - Andrew

Teaching – The Blessing of Praying in Unknown Tongues Copyright © Andrew J. Shreeve 2010
The Lord is so gracious and loving to us that He has created two ways for us to pray – with our mind and with our spirit. When we pray with our mind we speak intelligible words with our native language. When we pray with our spirit we speak unintelligible words, described in the bible as ‘unknown tongues.’
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 1 Corinthians 14:2
Notice in the above verse no man understandeth him. This tongue is different from the tongues which were spoken on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two. On that day the Christians spoke in languages which they personally did not understand, but the tongues were understood by those present from other nations (Acts 2:4-11).
The tongue in 1 Corinthians 14:2 is also different to the diversities of tongues referred to in 1 Corinthians 12:28. The 12:28 tongue is referring to an office which is set in the church; it says God has set some in the church. This is a selective gift. Just as not all are apostles, prophets, or teachers; not all are set in the church to speak with tongues and then interpret those tongues (1 Corinthians 12:28-30).
Through meticulous study of the Scriptures we understand there are a variety of manifestations of supernatural tongues available in the Christian experience. In this teaching I will focus on the spiritual manifestation of unknown tongues which is available to all born again Christians – this is the unknown tongue which no man understands.
When we speak in this unknown tongue we are speaking mysteries in the spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2). 1 Corinthians 14:14 says; if I pray in an unknown tongue my spirit prayeth. Speaking in unknown tongues is praying with our spirit. This is in contrast to praying with our understanding (1 Corinthians 14:14-15). Praying in unknown tongues is not praying with our understanding or mind, it is spiritual communication with God, it is not intellectual.
I personally have found that praying in unknown tongues is very liberating. To bypass my understanding and pray from my spirit gives me a wonderful sense of freedom. I can express the feelings in my heart to God without the constraint of language and intellect. This is not to suggest that intellectual communication with the Lord in not also wonderful, as it is. But we do not have to choose either or, we can embrace both.
The bible says when we pray in unknown tongues we edify ourselves, building up and emboldening our spirit (1 Corinthians 14:4). We are also giving thanks (1 Corinthians 14:16), and praying the perfect will of the Lord (Romans 8:27). The apostle Paul obviously knew the value of this wonderful blessed gift as he encouraged all Christians to pray in unknown tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5), and said that he spoke in unknown tongues more than all the Corinthian’ Christians (1 Corinthians 14:18).
The devil, through uninformed Christian leaders, has put pressure on the church to hide the gift of speaking in tongues, but this should not be so. The apostle Paul said that unknown tongues are for a sign… to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22), and not to forbid the speaking in unknown tongues (1 Corinthians 14:39). Let us remember that the first New Covenant sermon was on the subject of speaking in other tongues (Acts 2:14-21). Speaking in tongues is very significant as at is associated with the baptism with the Holy Spirit, which is the pouring out of God’s power and authority upon His church (Acts 2:4, 8:18, 10:46, 19:6). The teaching of the baptism with the Holy Spirit is one of the foundations of the principles of the doctrine of Christ (Hebrews 6:1-2).
If you are a Christian and are not yet speaking in unknown tongues, I encourage you to seek out a pastor who understands this spiritual gift. Ask him to lay his hands upon you and pray for Jesus to baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Jesus will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and you will be able to pray in unknown tongues. This will bring a richer spiritual experience into your life. I love you, Andrew.
